June is National Frozen Yogurt Month, so all of us at Electro Freeze would like to present you with some facts, trivia, and other interesting things about frozen yogurt or froyo!
Yogurt was invented over 4000 years ago somewhere in the Middle East and India. Over the years, it has become popular all over the world. Several attempts were made to bring frozen yogurt to the masses in the 70s, but consumers complained that it tasted too much like…yogurt. In 1981, TCBY was the first store to offer soft-serve frozen yogurt. Prior to that, you could only buy pre-packaged “hard pack” frozen yogurt. After TCBY’s success, frozen yogurt started taking off in the marketplace with triple-digit growth rates. By the middle of the 90s, frozen yogurt captured a 10% share of the frozen dessert market. Just when sales began to slip, John Wudel introduced a live probiotic powder-based mix, helping frozen yogurt regain its traction. Self-serve frozen yogurt shops opened across the country, with interest at an all-time high.
