National Soft Serve Day:
Celebrating Electro Freeze’s Place in Soft Serve History

On National Soft Serve Day, we celebrate one of America’s favorite frozen treats. Behind every perfectly smooth soft serve is nearly a century of innovation. For Electro Freeze®, soft serve isn’t just a product category; it’s part of our history.

Electro Freeze helped to shape the soft serve industry by introducing equipment innovations that have influenced how operators serve frozen treats and how consumers enjoy them. As we celebrate National Soft Serve Day on August 19, we want to look back at Electro Freeze’s role in the evolution of soft serve.

The Beginning of a Soft Serve Legacy

The story begins in 1929 when Charles Ericson started manufacturing soft serve ice cream machines from the Bronx, New York. At a time when the soft serve industry was still in its infancy, Ericson saw an opportunity to create equipment that could consistently produce the smooth, creamy frozen treats consumers were beginning to embrace.
Just a few years later, Electro Freeze introduced its first commercial soft serve machines, the Model 25 Regular and Model 25P. Released in 1937, these machines established the foundation for Electro Freeze’s reputation as a leader in frozen dessert equipment.

Helping Build the Modern Soft Serve Industry

While Electro Freeze was advancing soft serve technology, another important chapter was developing in East Moline, Illinois.

In 1946, H.C. Duke & Son was approached by the founders of Dairy Queen to repair an ice cream machine at one of their earliest locations in Moline, Illinois. After successfully repairing the unit, the company was asked to build additional machines. This project led H.C. Duke & Son into the frozen dessert equipment industry through the manufacture of the first pressurized ice cream freezer.

These two pioneering organizations would eventually merge in 1966 to drive decades of soft serve innovation.

Innovations That Changed Frozen Treats

As consumer demand grew, so did expectations for variety, consistency, and efficiency. Electro Freeze introduced innovations that helped expand the soft serve business.

Among the company’s notable milestones:

Looking Ahead

Nearly 100 years after Electro Freeze first entered the industry, consumers still love soft serve for the same reasons they always have: its smooth texture, creamy mouthfeel, and simple ability to make people smile.

From soft serve ice cream and frozen yogurt to frozen custard and specialty creations, the goal remains the same: helping operators serve products that keep customers coming back. Electro Freeze remains committed to producing equipment that delivers consistent quality, operational efficiency, and menu versatility.

From the first soft serve machines introduced in 1929 to today’s advanced frozen dessert technologies, Electro Freeze has spent nearly a century helping operators turn simple ingredients into memorable experiences. Because while equipment may evolve, some things never change. A perfectly served soft serve is one of life’s sweetest traditions.
